Much has been made of Conan O'Brien taking over as host of The Tonight Show, with nostalgic references to Johnny Carson. But the original host of Tonight was the magnificently versatile Steve Allen, in 1954. Here's a brief look at the sports world the year "Tonight" was a rookie.

It ain't the 297 Win Club, pal

By now you know that Randy Johnson won his 300th game on Thursday, becoming only 24th pitcher in the 140-year history of major-league baseball to reach that milestone. Meet Bob Mathews who, with 297 wins, is so close but yet so far.

Big Unit enters Cool Nickname Club

When Randy Johnson won his 300th game Thursday, he not only reached a significant milestone, but he brings his Big Unit nickname into a club full of pitchers with some of the coolest nicknames.

If Randy Johnson gets his 300th career win Wednesday, he'll be the 24th pitcher, and only the sixth left-hander to do so in baseball history " and the third to have pitched for the Giants.
